The upfront number vs. the lifetime number
Composite decking is almost always cheaper per square foot at the point of purchase. That is the number most homeowners see on a quote and it is the number that drives a lot of decisions. What the quote rarely shows is the cost over twenty years — and that is where tropical hardwood decking consistently wins.
A mid-grade composite deck installed today will typically require board replacement within 15 years, and in many cases, full replacement within 20. The boards fade, the surface degrades, and in direct sun environments the material can warp and buckle in ways that are expensive to fix and hard to make look right.
What Ipe looks like at year 20
Ipe decks installed in the early 2000s are still structurally sound and in active commercial use. Resort boardwalks, stadium seating platforms, and rooftop terraces built with Ipe two decades ago have not been replaced. The wood has weathered, oiled, and in some cases refinished — but the substrate is the same boards that were installed.
The reason is density. At approximately 60 to 70 pounds per cubic foot, Ipe simply does not behave like softer wood under the stress of seasons. It does not swell and contract dramatically. It does not allow moisture intrusion in the way that porous composites do. And it does not support the mold and mildew growth that shortens the life of lighter materials.
Maintenance: the real comparison
Composite decking is marketed as low-maintenance, and that is partly true — it does not need to be oiled or stained. What it does need is regular cleaning to prevent mold growth in the surface texture, and in many climates that cleaning is more frequent than manufacturers suggest.
Ipe oiled annually takes roughly 30 minutes per 200 square feet. Ipe left to silver requires nothing beyond an occasional pressure wash. Neither option is burdensome, and both produce a surface that composites cannot replicate visually — the grain, the warmth, the depth of real wood.
Where to source Ipe for your project
The practical challenge with Ipe is finding a supplier who stocks it reliably and grades it honestly. Ipe Woods USA carries NHLA-graded inventory across standard and custom dimensions, ships direct to job sites via LTL freight, and works with both residential and commercial contractors.
